Exciting projects show how maths can be fun

2/12/2008

PUPILS got a new take on an old subject during an entire week of fun maths activities at Deeplish Primary School in Rochdale.

The entire school took part in practical puzzles and problems designed to help improve their mathematical skills in an enjoyable way.

Year 6 tackled a Charlie and the Chocolate Factory-themed problem, in which they had to calculate how many bars of chocolate they could fit in boxes.

Younger pupils took their chairs onto the playground and calculated how far frogs can hop.

Year 6 teacher and maths co-ordinator Vikki Clayton said: "We wanted to promote to the children that they use maths in everything they do.

"It was all about getting away from just looking at the blackboard and being practical.

"It was nice to see them really enjoying themselves, they had a wonderful time.

"The children and staff really want to do it again."
