THE Rochdale Observer’s Can You Spare a Minute? appeal is almost £500 better off after the Muslim community listened to the rallying cry of a ward councillor to give generously during Ramadan.

Four weeks ago Councillor Mohammed Sharif appealed for Muslims to donate whatever they could afford to the appeal throughout the holy month, which is traditionally a time for reflection, prayer and providing for those in need.

His aim was not only to bring in cash, but also to raise the hospice‘s profile within the Asian community.

As Ramadan made way for Eid, Councillor Sharif said he was delighted with the response so far and hopes the donations will keep flooding in.

He said: "Springhill Hospice is doing very good work for all of our communities. It is our moral duty to help them raise funds to continue their excellent work.

"People have been coming up to me in the street and handing over cheques and money for the appeal.

"It’s good that so much has been given already, but I know it isn’t finished yet, other people have told me they are planning to donate, so there could be a few hundred pounds more still to come in the next few weeks.

"People should still give donations even though Ramadan has ended."

The hospice has announced its intention to start a support group in the near future to cement the developing links between itself and the Asian community.

Dean Connaughton, Springhill Hospice community fund-raiser, said: "We would like to thank the many people throughout the Asian community who have donated towards the appeal.

"Since the article appeared in the Rochdale Observer a few weeks ago, the donations have been pouring in and we would just like to acknowledge this and give a big thank you to all who have helped support us."
