Islamophobia 'escalating' in British prisons
15/10/2008
AN Islamic human rights group has expressed deep concern about an ever-increasing complaints it as been receiving from Muslim prisoners who say they are suffering from Islamophobia in British prisons.
The Islamic Human Rights Commission has said it has received an increasing number of complaints from prisoners.
Chair of the commission, Massoud Shadjareh said the problem was widespread and that their case load was not only limited to top security prisons Whitemoor, Belmarsh and Frankland.
He said: "A large number of our prison cases consist of people arbitrarily and without evidence labelled radical.
"Complaints range from the desecration of the Quran, strip searching male inmates in the presence of female guards armed with video cameras, removal of legal papers and the use of dogs."
Added Mr Shadjareh: "There needs to be more co-operation with others in genuinely identifying problem areas and finding ways to resolve them.
"Fear of radicalisation should not be used as an excuse for legitimising the rise of Islamophobia and racism."
