A Diamond India celebration

5/10/2007

OLDHAM’S Indian community celebrated 60 years of independence with a major cultural event at Queen Elizabeth's Hall.

The Indian Association of Oldham was formed in 1968, by the late Jagatsinh Sisodia, to help the local Indian community achieve integration and friendship.

Its role continues to be the education of the growing community and its youth in multi-cultural understanding while maintaining and preserving India’s rich heritage.

Entertainment was provided by the the borough’s Nrtya Jyoti Dance Troup (pictured).

Among the guests of honour was Mr Narayan, from the High Commission, who said: "This is the first community event I have been to in a long time where the full entertainment programme is based on our culture and is appropriate to the celebrations."
