diwali design

29/11/2004

THESE sisters and their friends toiled for four weeks to create probably the most stunning example of the ancient Indian art form of Rangoli - 'painting' pictures with coloured sand.
Their work depicting God measures 10ft by 5ft and is the largest example of Rangoli in Britain.
The design was created to mark Diwali, the festival of light, which is the main event in the Hindu calendar.
Suresh Gorasia, a member of the Shree Swaminarayan Temple committee, said: "It is the first time we have created a Rangoli artwork in the temple. Rangoli is a traditional form of art and dates back many hundreds of years in India.
"It can be used for any purpose, not necessarily for religious festivals. Normally, however, the designs are much smaller than this one.
"We have a number of members who are skilled in the art and they have taught others how to do it. The design took more than 250 hours to complete - and in about four week's time we will simply sweep it up.
"But in the meantime it is available for anyone to see."
Pictured standing round their work are sand artists Vellas Vekira, Jashu Vekira, Hin Hirani, Priya, Mita and Sita Verkira.
