We welcome Lord Chief Justice's comments on Shariah

4/ 7/2008

THE Ramadhan Foundation widely welcomes British Lord Chief Justice Lord Phillips for his speech on Sharia law as a balanced speech that recognises the UK’s diversity.

The speech sets out his personal views on implementing some elements of Sharia law within the UK – on matters relating to family and finance.

This important intervention is clear indication that the debate raised by the Archbishop of Canterbury was hijacked by bigots and those who wanted to attack Islam, this debate should have been held in an element of respect rather than scary headlines about terrorism and unnecessary comments from politicians.

We are grateful that the Lord Chief Justice has made this important intervention into tackling some of the misconceptions of Sharia law. There is clearly an appetite in this country for some elements of Sharia law to be implemented in relation to finance, family matters.

When the Archbishop of Canterbury raised this issue there were fascist headlines in some newspapers and unnecessary hatred directed towards Muslims, we should debate these issues but they must be in a respectful manner that is tolerant of other views.

Lord Phillips shows the importance of tackling ignorance on important issues, he stands taller today in the Muslim community.

Mohammed Shafiq, Director of Ramadhan Foundation
