Multi-lingual signs ‘loony’
1/11/2004
WE in Rochdale are well used to loony toon ideas of Mohammed
Salim expressed in crazy letters to Asian News and the Rochdale
Observer .
In the Asian News (October) he carries on as usual, this time about
the signs and directions around Rochdale Infirmary being in English
only. In this town we have people that speak Urdu, Gujarati,
Arabic, Bengali, Ukrainian etc, etc, etc. How big would Mr Salim
like the signs to be?
May I inform Mr Salim that in Turin, Italy the signposts around
hospitals and other public building are in Italian, yes
Italian.
I have a sister who is 63-years-old, she moved to Turin four years
ago. She now speaks and reads Italian quite good. My sister's
efforts in learning Italian has introduced her to many, many
Italians and enriched her life. That is the answer Mr Salim, not
signposts 50ft by 50ft.
