Laws correct religious imbalance

1/11/2004

We welcomed the Prime Minister's commitment to end religious discrimination taking place due to a loophole in the current legislation.
The measures will put an end to religious discrimination in the provision of goods, facilities, services and premises. The loophole that currently exists means that while people are protected against discrimination on the basis of colour, race, nationality or ethnic origin, some are not protected against discrimination on the basis of religion. The measures will address an imbalance that has emerged from case law where Jews and Sikhs are afforded protection while Hindus are not.
We have advised the Government on this, and many other legal irregularities that exist in current legislation. It is important to all Hindus that our advice has been heeded, and that finally we will see an end to religious discrimination.

Ramesh Kallidai, general secretary of the Hindu Forum, 53-63 Wembley Hill Road, Wembley, Middx HA9 8BE
