The danger is real to honour killing girl

29/11/2004

I AM pleased to see Asian News has highlighted the campaign to save Kiran Azam from being deported back to Pakistan (Asian News, November, page 1).
Because she married the 'wrong man' she is in danger of being the victim of an 'honour killing'
I know the danger she faces is only too real. In Pakistan I was an investigative journalist. When I exposed the involvement of politicians, fathers and brothers in so-called honour killings my home was torched and we were shot at by those involved.
It is a game for them - to play with innocent women's, and even men's, lives just because they have not obeyed.
They then use corrupt politicians and most corrupt police to avoid punishment for their most cruel crime.
Being a journalist it was my duty to expose those who were involved in killing of innocents. The government of Britain is now attempting to deport me back where my life will be in danger. I am a member of the National Union of Journalists and they are campaigning on my behalf. Let's hope justice is done in Kiran and my case.

Mansoor Hassan, Manchester
