Celebrate those gypsy origins

30/ 3/2007

Whilst working with gypsies in 2006 I was working with a group of English Literature students from Manchester University who were carrying out research into the language of gypsies. Two of the students were of Asian heritage, one a Sikh the other a Hindu, I was amazed by the fact that many of the words used in everyday gypsy language were the same as those spoken by the two Asian students.

I was aware that gypsies originated in India but it was great to see the language similarities still there, I think this is something that the respective communities should celebrate

Steve Jones, Manchester
