Were the Shere Khan raids and over-reaction?

30/ 3/2007

MY HEART goes out to Nighat Awan of the Shere Khan company. This woman is an inspiration overcoming two life-threatening illnesses and helping to build a business empire. Now the taint of illegal immigration hangs over her.

But I smell a rat. Did the immigration police over react? Was there really a need to invade restaurants and her home? We hear the breaches of the immigration acts have been technical - perhaps having a chef on a work permit working at one restaurant than another. If this is so - big deal, whose getting hurt, certainly not the diners enjoying a curry?

We in the Asian restaurant trade are well aware that this government has caused a crisis by banning all labour from the sub-continent save those at professor and doctor level. Where does this leave the massive, successful, and revenue earning Asian restaurant and take-away trade? Potentially without a source of workers. And don't tell us to employ home grown white people. We have tried, they just don't want to work as waiters, cooks and washers-up in Asian restaurants.

So government, you rob Pakistan, Bangladesh and Indian of doctors and key workers but ban those who want to work here at jobs no-ne else wants just to save a few pounds. Well done Blair government.
