Tories praised for community move

30/ 7/2007

Let me firstly say just how saddened I was with the scenes witnessed at Glasgow Airport . I totally condemn these attacks.

Religion has little to do with terrorism, it is used as a weapon to further their own ends, they rule by fear and fist. And show no regard for human life.

Integration is the way forward. Unfortunately those communities who have integrated would be the victims of any backlash.

I welcome the recent appointment of Sayeeda Warsi in the Tory Shadow Cabinet to the Community Cohesion brief. The Conservatives, to give them credit, clearly recognise the importance of building strong communities. I hope the new Communities minister, Hazel Blears MP, will learn to listen to local communities.

Her predecessor, Ruth Kelly, made several bad decisions and didn't exactly inspire confidence!

My aim is to bring everyone together from whatever background under shared values and a united Rochdale Borough. Celebrating diversity and working together are not just buzzwords but things I see day in and day out here in Rochdale. We all have work to do but lets be proud of our town and what we have built.

Councillor Zulfiqar Ali, Rochdale
