Fashion in motion

17/ 9/2007

The colourful and hugely creative UK-based Indian designer Manish Arora was the the latest focus of the Victoria and Albert Museum’s highly respected ‘Fashion in Motion’ exhibition.

Originally from Delhi, Manish is renowned for his phenomenally visual, vibrant clashing colours, texture and print with amazing detailing. His work was showcased during a catwalk show as part of London’s India Now celebration.

Said Manish: "Being the first Indian designer to showcase my work at the V&A, where great designers such as Christian Lacroix, Vivienne Westwood and Gareth Pugh have also showcased their collections, is a real tribute.

"It is a great surprise and a privilege to be part of this.’

V&A highlighted Arora’s collection from ‘London dress’ and ‘Bombay dress’ inspired by his experience of both cities.

The dresses are meant encapsulate the India Now season by celebrating each of the cities through fashion.

Arora launched his own fashion label Manish Arora in 1997, three years after he graduated from the National Institute of Fashion Technology, New Delhi.

Since then the 34 year-old designer has shown his work at various international fashion weeks from Hong Kong to Miami and most recently in London. He is the first Indian designer to be invited to show in Paris this coming season.

Arora has won many prizes including ‘Most Original Collection’ in the Young Asian Designers Competition 1995, ‘Best Women’s Prêt-a-Porter Designer’ for his diffusion line, Fish Fry, at the Indian Fashion Awards 2004 and ‘Best Collection’ at the Miami Fashion Week 2005. A collaboration with Reebok – Fish Fry for Reebok – has made Arora the first Indian fashion designer to work in partnership with an international sports brand.
