An innovative hip hop theatre production has united young people from Greater Manchester’s refugee and asylum seeker population with excluded youth from their host communities.
Inside The Lines is an all-consuming physical and visual experience, fusing street dance with theatre, roots with breaks, and digital images with an original and partly live music score. The plot explores and exposes themes of migration and alienation.
It tells the story of four teenagers – each with their own troubles – whose lives become entwined by the end of the show. Eric feels unloved and isolated and expresses himself through his sketch book and graffiti art. Nayim is an asylum seeker – a deep thinker who expresses himself through poetry. Sara is a young activist who has lost all connection with her parents’ homeland. Her friend Eva is stifled by the area she has grown up in and wants to get out and see the wider world.
The moving and uplifting tale draws from stories told by young people with refugee and asylum seeker status who took part in the Urban Music Theatre project run by Community Arts North West (CAN), in association with Zion Arts Centre. The production is directed by Chris Sudworth and produced by Yasmin Yaqub.
Yasmin Yaqub of CAN said: “This project has united young people from Greater Manchester’s refugee and asylum seeker population with excluded youth from their host communities and has engaged so many people on so many levels."
“It has been challenging but also really fulfilling to see that we have provided such a quality process for over 150 young people”.
Inside the Lines follows the success of last year’s production called These City Streets, also at Zion Arts Centre.
