Meet the Mukherjees @ Octagon Theatre, Bolton, 1-24 May

1/ 5/2008

A ROMANTIC play, which looks at the relationship between an Asian girl and a black man, is having its world premiere at Bolton's Octagon theatre tonight.

Meet the Mukherjees is a fun comedy about singleton, 30-year-old Anita who is under pressure by her mum to settle down and get married as she thinks her daughter is past her sell by date.

Anita soon meets ladies-man Aaron, who pursues Anita until she gives in, and they fall in love and plan a future together.

But Anita and Aaron have to face reality and introduce their parents to each other.

Multi-award winning playwright Tanika Gupta wanted to write a play about an interracial relationship after seeing the opposition faced by friends who have dated out of their own community.

She said: "Many years ago it was seen as really bad for an Asian girl to meet and marry a white man, but to marry a black man was just out of the question, people just won’t hear of it.

"It's still seen as the last taboo in the Asian community and there is much more opposition to it than marrying a white man.

"There is much underlying prejudice in the Asian community and this play touches on that.

"Though the theme is serious this is a light hearted comedy about two people coming together.

"Whatever people's race or background, as people we're really not that different and I hope this comes across."

The cast includes Wyllie Longmore, a patron of the Octagon’s 40th Anniversary Season, who was nominated for an MEN Theatre Award, 2005, as Best Actor in a Leading Role in I Just Stopped By To See The Man, Rokhsaneh Ghawam-Shahidi and Pooja Ghai, who both appeared in Rafta, Rafta in the recent National Theatre tour. Ayesha Gwilt, Anni Domingo, Mark Springer, Keeley Forsyth and Nicholas Khan complete the cast.

Meet the Mukherjees will play at Bolton's Octagon Theatre from 1 May – 24 May. Tickets from £8.50 on 01204 520661, or at www.octagonbolton.co.uk.
