Local music maestro to perform at The Lowry

16/ 7/2008

AN Indian music maestro from Ashton will perform at Salford’s prestigious Lowry Theatre.

Rakesh Joshi is artistic director of Raga Jyoti, an ensemble of 25 talented Indian and European musicians who play traditional and modern Indian classical music.

The performance will be a unique collaboration between Raga Jyoti musicians and members of the Halle Youth Orchestra.

Featuring traditional instruments such as tabla, pakhawaj, sitar and santoor played alongside their classical Western equivalents, the evening also includes chants in Sanskrit, the ancient language of India, to capture the beauty and spirituality of this extraordinary culture.

Rakesh, who first learnt to sing in India aged just seven, said: "Raga Jyoti have a history of presenting soothing and joyful Indian music compositions. It’s unique because it combines Indian and European musicians performing traditional North and South Indian music in ensemble style.

Our aim is to promote Indian music and culture in the UK and worldwide."

Created in 2001, Raga Jyoti has already proved a hit at Manchester’s Bridgewater Hall in 2004 and previously at the Lowry with their Eternity Concert in 2005.

The Divinity Concert takes place on 13 September at The Lowry. Ticket details on 0870 787 5790 or www.thelowry.com
