Fusion of sounds at Goldsmiths

23/ 7/2008

TWO exceptional performances will be held at Goldsmiths, University of London as part of a project, which seeks to bring together Western and Indian music.

Sringar and Avatars will be performed on Thursday 7 August between 7.30pm-9.30pm at the Great Hall, Richard Hoggart Building, Lewisham Way.

'Sringar: An International Love-Song Cycle' will see two of India's greatest middle-generation khyal singers, Pandits Rajan and Sajan Misra collaborate with a new-music ensemble. Exploring ways in which Indian and European new-music can interact, the performance will consist of re-interpretations of love songs from both traditions including works created in response to Purcell's 'Dido's Lament' and Schubert's 'Du bist die Ruh'.

'Avatars: Human-Computer Interactions in the Realm of Dhrupad' will experiment with the voice of a dhrupad singer. Dhrupad is a slow, dignified form of Indian art-music with a long history. A dhrupad singer is
rigorously trained to develop a resonant, flexible voice, which is the result of a deeply relaxed, highly sensitised vibrating human body. In this performance a computer system will be used to magnify or transform elements of Amelia Cuni's dhrupad vocal.

These performances are part of a five-year Arts and Humanities Research Council project led by Dr Francis Silkstone from the Department of Music at Goldsmiths.

Said Dr Silkstone: "We want to deepen and intensify the possibilities for making intercultural music whilst broadening its appeal. In partnership with the Asian Music Circuit, I am developing plans for a five-year series of concerts in which some of India's greatest musicians collaborate with their peers from Western contemporary art-music. The resulting music will be of interest to major concert venues and festivals across Europe, South Asia, and beyond."

Dr Silkstone is also looking for volunteers to join a focus group for the project.

He is interested in hearing the views of both non-musically trained and expert musician audience members. Participants would discuss the music at regular focus groups with some of India's greatest living musicians and Europe's leading classical performers. If you are interested in joining the focus group please email Francis Silkstone - f.silkstone@gold.ac.uk - putting 'Evaluating intercultural music' in the email subject header.

For more information on the performance on 7 August contact the Department of Music on 020 7919 7640. The event is free.
