23/ 7/2008

BIRMINGHAM Eid Mela returns to Cannon Hill Park on Sunday 27th July to celebrate the diversity of the Muslim community in the Mislands.

Showcasing Islamic culture, food, sport, art and entertainment the festival, now in its eighth year, is free and open to all regardless of faith or culture.

International artist Dawud Wharnsby Ali will be headlining the entertainments, along with UK acts including Legacy, Poetic Pilgrimage, AK Folk Group and Khaleel Mohammed.

The Lord Mayor Councillor Chauhdry Rashid will be formally opening the event, and there will be a range of family activities to enjoy including a funfair, a bazaar, clothing, jewellery and music stalls and Dhol drumming. A Kabbadi match between Birmingham and Manchester also promises to provide some excitement as the two teams battle for victory!

Said Cllr Ray Hassall, Cabinet Member for Leisure, Sport and Culture: "Birmingham City Council is proud to be supporting this fantastic celebration of Islamic culture in the beautiful setting of Cannon Hill Park. This is another great free family event in our programme of summer activities."

Cllr Zaker Choudhry, Chair of Birmingham Eid Mela Committee added: "The Birmingham Eid Mela will be another vibrant and colourful celebration of South Asian culture, and we invite everyone to come and join the celebrations at this family friendly festival."

Visitors are advised to arrive early and use public transport where possible, and if travelling by car to only park in designated areas. Clearly signposted parking will be available in Queens Ride, Calthorpe Park and Holders Lane with marked pedestrian paths to the park.

The Birmingham Eid Mela is organised in partnership by Birmingham City Council, Muslim Organisations and the Muslim Community in Birmingham.

Parking restrictions will be in force on Edgbaston Road, Pebble Mill and Pershore Road between Edward Road and Pebble Mill. Other roads surrounding Cannon Hill Park will be closed 12-7pm on the day, with access for residents only.
