Debate to discuss relationship between Islam and hip-hop

10/10/2008

THE relationship between Islam and hip-hop will be the centre of a debate next week.

Whether Islam and hip-hop are compatible and what are the boundaries are just come of the questions that will be posed to young people.

The event will be chaired by Rakin Fetuga of Mecca2Medina, and will aim to discuss these questions and explore the influence that hip hop has had on young British Muslim life.

Rakin Fetuga has been working in the music business for over 20 years, getting involved in hip hop music in the early 80's and forming the successful Islamic hip hop band Mecca2Medina eight-years ago. In their music, Mecca2Medina aims to provide knowledge of Islam and Islamic issues to Muslims and non-Muslims alike. Audience members will be able to put their questions to a panel of guest speakers.

The debate will be followed by a live gig in Rich Mix Bar featuring Mecca2Medina, Masika AKA Ffasibillah, Lil Mia, Ppearls of Islam, Baby Muslims, Lemoy, UK Apache and Muhammed Yah Yyah.

This event is a collaboration with Arts Council England and part of the Arts and Islam platform. For more information visit: www.artsandislam.com

Islam and Hip Hop, Debate and Live Gig will take place on Wed 15 October at Rich Mix, 35 - 47 Bethnal Green Road, London, 5.00pm – 7.00pm. Tickets are £5 - for debate and gig.
