Twins turn to love

PICTURES by twin artists which colourfully combines modern icons
like David Beckham and Princess Diana with traditional Indian art
styles will be the subject of a major exhibition.
Internationally acclaimed twins Amrit and Rabindra Singh will shown
their work for the first time in their home town of
Liverpool.
Their most famous pictures will be hung including a portrait of
Princess Diana, a depiction of the Beckhams as "the new Royal
Family" and 'Nineteen Eighty Four' which captures the human tragedy
of the Indian government's storming of the Golden Temple in
1984.
A recent series of paintings, 'The Art of Loving', is based on
Indian traditional miniature painting that grew up in 17th
century.
One called 'Some Like It Hot' transports a 17th century Indian
heroine into the 21st century setting where the girl is portrayed
as a love sick fan of Mel GIbson.
'Steppin' Out With My Baby (My Dona)' features a sweetheart
adorning herself in anticipation of her lover's arrival. She adopts
a 'mix and match' of western and easter accessories and beauty
treatments imitating the pop icon, Madonna.
Amrit and Rabindra studied art at Liverpool University. They have
had exhibitions at the Glasgow Gallery of Modern Art and Birmingham
City Art Gallery, Leeds City Art Gallery, UCR Sweeny Art Gallery,
and Riverside Art Museum, California and McMaster Gallery of Fine
Art, Toronto.
The Singh twins were artists in residence for the Commonwealth
Games in 2002 and have lectured on their work at the Tate Britain
and the Asian Art Museum in San Francisco.
They are the only British artists, after sculptor Henry Moore, to
have been offered an exhibition at the prestigious National Gallery
of Modern Art in Delhi.
Their latest exhibition can be seen at Liverpool's National Museum
between 22 January - 17 April next year.
