Indian toys brightens up gallery

28/ 7/2006

A VIBRANT exhibition of Indian toys is on display at Gallery Oldham throughout this summer.

'Khel: Toys from India' looks at the world of toys from across the country featuring playthings used by millions of children in the past and present.

There is a strong tradition in India of making toys by hand using the natural resources available locally. Toys are also made from recycled materials including paper, plastic, wool and even old videotape.

A section in the exhibition includes objects and toys made by some of India's poorest children, the street-dwellers of New Delhi.

Colourful and intricate puppets used in traditional Indian entertainment are also on show alongside clay dancing dolls, miniature glass animals and brass figures which represent toys made for ornamentation.

Paper kites, mobiles and lanterns hang above a selection of Madhubani and folk story paintings, kantha embroideries and appliqué work.

The exhibition is on show at Gallery Oldham until 2 September and admission is free. For more details call 0161 911 4653.
