Miniature art goes modern

Contemporary art work reflecting Pakistan's turbulent history
and its feeling towards national identify has arrived at Manchester
Art Gallery.
'Beyond the Page' brings eight of the most "prestigious" artists
trained in Pakistan to the city as part of the Festival of Muslim
Cultures 2006.
The works are inspired by the traditional art of miniatures
painting and features Melbourne based artists Nusrat Latif Qureshi
collages, 'Passionate Being in Flight' and 'Familiar desires 1'
which are made up of decorative patterns and 19th century
photographic images.
Aisha Khalid's 'Infinite Justice' is a striking fabric artwork made
from over 1000 sewing needles with black and maroon silk thread,
inspired by the war against terror.
There will also be a large scale painting by Imran Qureshi created
directly onto the gallery walls and giant vinyl artwork by Qureshi
and Rashid Rana specially commissioned for the gallery's glass
atrium.
'Beyond the Page' was conceived by Asia House in partnership with
Shisha and the gallery and will run until 15 January 2007.
