Writers wanted to pen the Asian experience

The search is on for writers of British Asian drama for the stage.

Oldham Coliseum, the BBC and Tamasha Theatre Company have joined forces to search for writers in a new four-year initiative called BANG! - British Asian New Generation.

The competition, which is to be launched on 2 October, is a search for writers who can pen their work in an engaging way about the British Asian experience.

This is also an opportunity for writers to win support from companies with a strong background in producing original drama.

The winner and two runners up will receive a cash bursary of up to £1,000, as well as a writing mentor who will help the winner to develop a first piece for the theatre.

The competition is open to all writers in the North of England and submissions will be welcomed from anyone, whatever their experience. The submitted work must be un-published and un-performed and must be written in English.

For those who wish to participate, but would like some help to get started, writing workshops are being offered following the launch of the competition.

They will be held at various venues throughout the north between 6 and 13 October.

To enter, writers should submit 10 to 15 pages of script which can either be a complete play, or an extract from a longer piece. If it is the latter, a one page treatment of how the story unfolds should also be supplied.

The deadline for completed manuscripts is 8 January 2007 and the winners will be announced on 28 February 2007. More information on how to enter the competition can be found at www.bbc.co.uk/writersroom/opportunity/bang.
