Manchester poet inspires students

19/12/2006

MANCHESTER-based poet Shamshad Khan visited Leeds Girls' High School recently and performed a range of poetry on a personal and political level.

She covered themes of identity, culture, love and death.

The girls then asked probing questions about the subjects that inspire her creativity and she in turn asked them the same, keen to encourage the students to write.

Radio 4 recorded the performance and after show discussion, extracts of which made up a two part series 'Sing Your Own Psalms' in which Shamshad spoke to poets in Britain and the USA exploring just what it means to be a poet and a Muslim in the west and how recent world events are impacting on them and their writings.

The recordings can be heard on the internet as part of Radio 4's Listen Again service.
