Countdown begins to Indian 'Oscars'

4/ 6/2008

COUNTDOWN has begun to the grandest celebration of Indian cinema, the tenth International Indian Film Academy (IIFA) Weekend 2008, taking place in Bangkok, Thailand from 6-8 June.

In its nine years of existence, the IIFAs has travelled to three continents and nine locations across the globe, reaching out to a worldwide audience through its various platforms.

Opening up new markets, bilateral trade and tie-ups with India, IIFA has pioneered the cause of Indian cinema, leveraging it as a platform to ‘build bridges’ between communities and nations.

IIFA Weekend Bangkok 2008 is geared up to create new benchmarks in the entertainment industry. Some of this weekend’s event highlights include:

· FICCI-IIFA Global Business Forum, a dynamic global platform providing the industry with an opportunity to deliberate on a diverse range of business, bilateral economic and political issues.

· For the international fashionista, the IIFA Fashion extravaganza will reflect the trends and styles that rule the Indian film industry and offer a sneak preview into the key looks of this year’s blockbuster film releases.

· IIFA World Premiere, another major highlight at the IIFA Weekend, gives the world a glimpse into the next big thing in Indian Cinema. This year, the IIFA World Premiere at Major Cineplex, Bangkok, will showcase the much awaited Sarkar Raj, the long-awaited remake of The Godfather, starring Indian film icons Amitabh Bachchan (IIFA Brand Ambassador), Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, and directed by one of the most accomplished Indian directors Ram Gopal Varma.

· IDEA IIFA Awards 2008 to be held at Siam Niramit, Bangkok, for which over 500 stars, luminaries, movers and shakers from the world of Indian cinema will descend in characteristic grandeur upon the mesmerising city.

· In its effort to contribute to society and the world at large, IIFA launched its green agenda last year at the IIFA Weekend in Yorkshire. This year, IIFA 2008 has launched the Green Globe Foundation and tied up with United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) to work towards sharing knowledge, promoting advocacy on various problems within the environment domain.
