Puerile kitsch overwhelms Dhawan ‘comedy’

5/ 6/2003

Director David Dhawan sticks to his often-repeated formula of slapstick comedy.

The movie is riddled with crass gags and nonsensical humour that has been the backbone of all of Dhawan's films.

The plot features two notorious, small-town thugs Tara (Sanjay Dutt) and Sitara (Govinda).

One day when the police are chasing them, the pair mistakenly shoot one of the most dreaded criminals in India called Cobra (Ashish Vidyarthi).

While Tara and Sitara manage to get away, unlucky Cobra falls into the clutches of police as a prize catch and he vows revenge.

The first half of the film is appealing thanks to a few spine-tickling puns and pranks. But it down hill from then on.

The story begins to lose pace and is overwhelmed by kitchy situations and puerile jokes.

Both Govinda and Sanjay Dutt fail to make much mark because of the lack of good script.

Govinda just about manages to fit the daft comedy role but Sanjay just looks sheepish and very stiff.

He should just stick to action roles in future.

If your not a fan of slapstick comedy or Govinda - like myself - then this film is pure torture.
