Bolly star in the making

31/ 5/2004

Channel 4's search for the next British Bollywood star will hit our screens this month.
The four part series follows UK hopefuls as they go on a Pop Idol style contest in their bid to win a part in Bollywood director Mahesh Bhatt's new movie.
Bollywood has been embraced worldwide, especially in western pop culture, with everyone from Missy Elliott to Andrew Lloyd Webber taking their cue from Bombay.
Yet despite its love affair with the Bollywood movie scene, Britain has failed to produce a home-grown Bollywood star - until, maybe, now.
Over 1000 hopefuls applied for auditions and the programme follows every stage of the competition, from the early auditions featuring both the talented and no-hopers, to the selection of the lucky six finalists, chosen to make a trip of a lifetime to Mumbai.
The lucky six then face two weeks of intensive training with leading industry experts (including Asha Chandra, who runs a Bollywood acting academy, top choreographer Shiamak Davar, stunt trainer Mahendra Verma and stylist Manish Maholtra), before performing and being judged live in front of an Indian audience.
As well as experiencing the glitz and glamour of the Indian film industry, the six finalists will see Mumbai life first hand, from a visit to the local market to backstairs in the servants' quaters of mansions of the rich.
For some the trip will be will be a journey of self-discovery and cultural identity.
The series culminates in a grand final where the top three contestants will audition in front of Mahesh Bhatt, who will then make the final selection.
The show also follows the human interest stories behind the contestants who are from all corners of Britain, from a drag queen to a mother-and-daughter duo competing against each other, for this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.
Bollywood Star starts on Tuesday 1 June at 9pm.
