Tearjerker well worth it
30/11/2004
LAILA-Majnu, Heer-Ranjha, Sohni-Mahiwal, now add one more pair
to the list of legendary lovers, Veer-Zaara.
The anticipated and awaited film of the year finally hit the
screens for Diwali and is proving to be a great hit all over the
country.
Director Yash Chopra has out done himself this time with this Romeo
and Juliet style story based around partition.
Preity Zinta stars as Zaara, a rich Pakistani girl who travels to
India to immerse the ashes of her Sikh nanny. There, she meets Veer
(Shah Rukh Khan), an Indian helicopter pilot, and they fall in
love.
However, Zaara is already engaged to the son of a politician in
Pakistan, Raza (Manoj Bajpai) and she has to head back as her
wedding preparations are well under way.
Zaara cannot get Veer out of her mind but her parents will never
agree to her marrying an Indian. After seeing her so miserable,
Zaara's maid contacts Veer and tells him to take Zaara away.
Veer rushes to Pakistan leaving everything behind. There he meets
Zaara, and expresses his feelings for her in front of Zaara's
family.
But the lovers are separated, Zaara marries Raza and Veer is put in
jail framed as an Indian spy.
After 22 years in Jail, Pakistani lawyer , Sameeha (Rani Mukherjee)
takes on Veer's case and vows to get him justice.
The film has everything it takes to make it work.....romance,
emotional drama, songs, beautiful shots, dialogues etc. The movie
is a bit long and there are too many songs that are not really
needed. But there are enough dramatic sequences to keep the
audience interest intact. Overall the film has a classic look with
authentic settings and well made costumes.
The songs by late Madan Mohan go well with the movie.
Performance wise the cast does justice to their roles. Shah Rukh
Khan in his umpteenth role as the forlorn lover does his act all
over again with ease, Preity Zinta looks elegant and portrays her
role as a Pakistani girl with grace.
Guest appearance by Amitabh Bachchan and Hema Malini who play
Veer's adoptive parents was a great surprise.
Overall this tearjerker is worth watching and guaranteed to be
nominated for numerous awards next year.
