Bolly ‘Oscars’ up north
30/11/2005
BRITAIN'S biggest county, Yorkshire, could be hosting the 2007
Indian 'Oscars.'
Yorkshire Forward, a regional development agency said there had
been a "positive response" to Yorkshire's approach to launch an
official bid following a fact-finding mission to the region by
International indian Film Wards (IIFA) officials in
September.
Yorkshire towns including Bradford, Hull, Leeds, Sheffield and York
would each hold one aspect of the glittering awards, according to
Yorkshire Forward.
The event is expected to boost the region's economy by 30 million
pounds, increase tourist numbers, bridge cultural divides and raise
the region's profile internationally.
Apart from the awards ceremony, the cities would organise events
including as food and dance festivals, film premieres, a trade
summit and charity cricket match.
Spokesperson for Yorkshire forward, Stuart McFarlane said: "These
awards are larger than the US Oscars because of the following that
Bollywood has. This is a worldwide event which would give this
region a worldwide profile if we were able to host such a
prestigious event".
The development agency, which is being supported by Yorkshire
Tourist Board, had initially proposed to launch a bid to host the
awards in 2006 but has decided to refocus its efforts to give it
more time for preparation and planning of a formal approach for
2007.
MR McFarlane, who said 7,000 overseas visitors would come to
Yorkshire for the event, said a bid could cost up to five million
pounds.
He said never before had a region looked to host the awards, which
attracts an international TV audience of 400 million people, rather
than an individual city.
"What we are trying to do is sell a region," he said. "I think one
of the key things is that we feel we can bring economic, commercial
and cultural benefits to the region and that would far outweigh the
cost and effort of putting on the event".
The awards, first held in London in 2000, are presented outside
India each year to promote Indian films to an international
audience.
