Urban folk will bring creativity to city

29/ 8/2007

URBAN folk music came to Manchester in the build-up for a festival celebrating the city's creative spirit.

A music workshop was set up at the Beehive Studios on Radium Street in Ancoats to rehearse for what is being billed as the New Islington Festival this Saturday.

The session featured Manchester hip hop band Rhythm 'n' Grime and folk outfit Kate and Gregg's Boat Band.

And what emerged, according to organisers, was: `the creation of a new kind of music - urban folk.'

Visitors to this weekend's free festival will get the first chance to hear the resulting concoction of cultural and musical offerings.

The New Islington Festival is a celebration of the area's meeting of styles - featuring art, film, poetry, literature and music.

The event is being set up by New East Manchester, the re-generation company, English Partnerships and Urban Splash.

It will feature more than 70 acts in 11 different performance areas.

Literature fans will get the chance to watch performance poets Anthony Joseph and Lemn Sissay act out their written works.
