Awards aim to be the Asian MOBOs

THE UK Asian music industry has launched its own version of the MOBO awards.

For the first time the ceremony will move out of small nightclub venues to London's refurbished Royal Festival Hall which has seating for over 2,000.

The new-look awards were launched at a special show in Leicester Square in the heart of the capital's entertainments quarter hosted by Bolyywood star Kalvinder Girth.

The enthusiastic audience heard performances from singer-songwrighter Sonny Rele, Swami, Rishi Rishi, Punjabi Hit Squad among others.

The 2008 award ceremony will take on March 6 at the Festival Hall which is in the Southbank Centre, on the Thames riverfront at Waterloo.

The award catagories range from best album, best act and best newcomer to best club DJ and best website.

Voting has opened and will close on December 31 after which the final nominees for the awards will be announced. The voting will then re-open on January 7 and the public will be able to vote for their favourites. Together with an independent panel of judges the winner will be selected to be announced on March 6.
