Whether it’s her religion, her marriage or her rather unique approach to adopting children, Madonna rarely does anything without someone (usually the tabloid press) raising mass objections.
Not that she cares what the critics think. If we’ve learnt anything from this past year of Madonna headlines (and a great many there have been, too), it’s that whatever Madonna wants, she ultimately gets. This Queen of Pop never takes no for an answer.
Of course, vindication has been a running theme throughout her career.
Whenever she’s faced with opposition, Madonna will invariably kick it out of the way and skip towards glory, no doubt doing her very own Vogue celebration dance.
She started this trend very early, aged 18, arriving in New York with just $30 in her pocket and, despite receiving numerous knockbacks, she finally fulfilled her star ambitions and ended up dictating pop culture for the next 30 years, reinventing herself for every new pop generation.
Whenever her critics protested, Madonna did what she wanted anyway, from exploiting religion in the Like a Prayer video to her infamous Sex book and even, most recently, when she had the audacity to (shock, horror) wear a pink leotard at the age of 50.
Defying that age milestone, the Madonna myth-making machine rolls on.
But as we all know, she will get her own way in the end.
Whether it’s next week’s much-awaited MEN Arena concert or 10 years further down the line, Madonna will always dream up new ways to entertain, entice and, of course, provoke a little outrage.
And what the Queen of Pop wants, she gets.
- The Madonna Sticky and Sweet tour is at the MEN Arena on Tuesday, July 7. Tickets are priced from £65 to £175. To check availability, ring 0844 847 8000 or log on to booking website ticketmaster.co.uk
