Our very own pop princess

28/ 7/2006

A NEW singing talent is set to spice up the musical world as she releases her first album Each To Their Own.

But Sandhya Rajagopal, whose parents now live in Rochdale, is not your average Bollywood singer. Instead she draws on influences such as Jewel and Shania Twain for inspiration.

The 22-year-old plays guitar and has always enjoyed singing, but got serious about her talents after meeting producer Ashish Rama at university in Bristol, where she is studying dentistry.

She has since gigged at a number of high profile venues, notably with Montell Jordan at the Carling Academy in Islington.

"I did not know I could write songs but when I got started it all came spilling out," she said. "I write about my own experiences and hope other people can relate to it.

"The single One Last Moment is dedicated to my uncle. He passed away last year but was the one who first forced me into singing.

"I have got a definite sound as I am not doing the bhangra scene and there are not that many Asian female artists doing mainstream stuff. But it was not a conscious choice.
"I feel most comfortable writing in English.

"Though I love bhangra, I do not think I myself could pull it off or that my lyrics would suit that sort of genre. It is quite an achievement and feels really good when you are performing your own stuff and people actually like it."

Each To Their Own will be available to download on I-Tunes, as well as at specialist music shops.

Although she is hoping it will be successful enough to spawn a second album, Sandhya is not leaving behind her dentistry just yet.

She said: "Both are things close to my heart, but music is a top priority I want to carry on with."

Sandhya says she hopes to perform in Rochdale soon but, in the meantime, you can catch her at the Manchester Mela in Platt Fields Park this weekend..
