Corrie’s Bolly wedding
24/ 9/2004
CORRIE bosses are planning a Bollywood blockbuster on the soap's
first Asian wedding.
A specially constructed Hindu temple (pictured above) and Indian
restaurant costing tens of thousands have been built for the
marriage of Dev and Sunita,.
Bosses decided to shell out big on TV's Wedding of the Year with a
stunningly opulent set.
It took a month to build and put together on site at Granada's Quay
Street HQ.
The insider added: "No expense is being spared and it looks
amazing."
The sets include a huge Hindu temple and an Indian restaurant. A
sumptuous mix of gold and deep red is used to give the Weatherfield
nuptials an authentic Indian façade.
Television chiefs had considered using a genuine Hindu temple in
the city for filming, but realised it would be impractical to take
over a place of religious worship for an estimated six days.
Instead, a temple and restaurant were constructed at the Manchester
studios so that the wedding can be as close to looking like the
real thing as possible. A spokesman said: "It is very Bollywood in
style, with an elaborate buffet, including a huge cake based on the
Taj Mahal.
"We would normally film something like this on location away from
the studios.
"But with so many cast members involved, that became a logistical
nightmare difficult to pull off."
Julian Perkins, Granada's head of design production, said: "I think
viewers will be stunned by how lavish and different it is from
anything they ever seen before.
"Visually, it is very colourful and something that should stay in
the memory as a special moment for a very long time."
