29/ 5/2006
Contemporary Bangladeshi artwork will form part of a new
exhibition at Oldham Art Gallery
'Oldham New' will showcase work from Bangladesh as well as art
works by British Asian artists.
It will also feature paintings, ceramics and photography, as well
as items donated by the people of Oldham that reflects life in the
borough over the last 200 years.
Gallery Oldham has collected Asian art since the late 19th century
and as a result it has one of the biggest collections of
contemporary Bangladeshi art in Britain.
These include a large oil painting called 'The Story of Mahua', by
Abdus Shakoor which explores a traditional folk story, 'Madonna' is
a print by Rokeya Sultana, a prominent printmaker working in Dhaka
and a large painting by well known political cartoonist Shishir
Bhattacharjee which satirises the idea of heroism (pictured).
Art curator Dinah Winch has also acquired two new works from
Bangladesh, a film advertising image used to decorate rickshaws and
a painting by a rickshaw artist. These new works capture a dying
tradition in Bangladesh.
British Asian artist, Shezad Dawood will feature his photograph
called the 'The Party'. It shows a British Asian man dressing up as
Peter Sellers, a white British actor, who impersonated an Indian
man in the 1968 film 'The Party.'
Dawood often appropriates familiar imagery from film and
advertising and uses it to examine issues of identity.
A collection of coins from India and East Africa are also on show
as well as an Urdu typewriter which was used by Oldham resource and
information centre, who provided a free translation service to
community groups and individuals.
'Oldham New' is on show at Gallery Oldham until 24 June. For more
