INTERNATIONAL FILM STARS OF ‘PROVOKED’ BRING MOVIE MADNESS TO LONDON’S WEST END
13/ 4/2007
Movie mania was brought to London's West End, as film aficionados descended upon Empire Cinema Leicester Square for a special preview screening of the much acclaimed film, Provoked.
Key cast and crew members including Bollywood star Aishwarya Rai, accompanied by fiancé Abhishek Bachchan, Eastender's Steve McFadden, Nandita Das, Jag Mundhra and Kiranjit Ahluwalia, appeared on stage to open the film to the frenzy of onlooking fans.
Opening the event, Jyoti Deshpande, COO Eros International, presented Kiranjit Ahluwalia, the woman on whose true life experiences the film is inspired, with a cheque and announced that one per cent of all of the film's UK Box Office proceeds will go directly to Kiranjit and women's rights activist group, Southall Black Sisters.
The film is based on the true life account of Kiranjit Ahluwalia's suffering in a ten-year marriage of repeated physical, sexual and mental abuse, her imprisonment for the consequent killing of her husband, and her release from jail after an appeal that established a landmark turning point in the meaning of 'provocation' in the cases of battered women, facilitated by the support and media attention rallied at the time by women's activist group, Southall Black Sisters.
Kishore Lulla, CEO Eros International said: "It is an absolute and total honour for us to be involved with such a deeply affecting film, which conveys such a strong social message. This film is a token of our unconditional commitment to the cause of raising awareness of the plight of women who are the victims of domestic violence."
Talking of her hopes for the film's release at the media event, Kiranjit Ahluwalia said, "I wanted to pass on my message to all the women out there who are suffering like I did. Don't suffer in silence, because of fear of the family and community. There are organisations that are there to offer help and support, like Southall Black Sisters. This message should be carried to everybody."
Renowned for his enduring role as Phil Mitchell in British soap Eastenders, Steve McFadden added, "The most satisfying experience of this was making Aishwarya cry. In our first scene together, I charged on set like a rhino, and got her in tears. As well as being very beautiful, she was also extremely graceful in her crying. I've made people cry a lot during my acting career, but to do it on an international stage was fantastic."
