A Bolly good show
31/ 5/2007
THE glitz and glamour of a Bollywood movie set was transported
to Oldham.
Film-makers chose the old town hall steps as the perfect
location for the colourful dance-off finale for their short
film.
'Oldham ka Raja', or Oldham's Prince, is a Romeo and Juliet
story of forbidden love which uses the traditional conventions of a
classic Bollywood hit fused with western influences.
The film is the culmination of a year-long project led by
Oldham Theatre Workshop and Oldham-based arts group Peshkar
Productions which has turned hundreds of borough youngsters into
movie stars.
It started out as a small cohesion exercise at South
Chadderton School and has spread to include 39 schools and a number
of community groups across the area.
Scenes have been filmed at various locations around Oldham,
including Boundary Park
Craig Harris, applied theatre practitioner at Oldham Theatre
Workshop, said: "The kids have had a ball. For a lot of them it's
their first taste of the arts and people have travelled to other
schools and communities.
"We very much want to build on what we've done and want to
push the idea of alternative art forms as well as regular dance,
drama and arts in schools and communities. But the most important
thing is that the events are integrated and that everybody is
welcome to come and take part."
It is hoped the finished film will be screened via a portable cinema in a number of public places across the borough later this year and will also be available on the internet.
