In my dreams I find Allah
4/ 5/2004
A MANCHESTER academic who believes he can prove the existence of
god through a dream theory he has developed, says the US government
and military are monitoring his progress.
Dr Umar Azam, who has completed a PhD thesis entitled Dreams and
Islam is convinced that the fact a person dreams is proof that god
exists.
He claims to have dreamt of his house in heaven - and interprets
this as a message form god saying he is pleased with his
work.
He has now created a website about his research which has had over
1,000 hits from the US government and military and 90,0000 hits
through the world.
Dr Azam said many books and studies have been written about the
psychological state of dreaming since the works of Freud and Jung,
but there have been few studies about the religious nature of
dreams.
He said: "What is the relationship of dreams to the spiritual
world? Is the fact that dreams can foretell the future a sign of
the omniscience of Allah? Why are some dreams 'good' in essence,
and others 'evil?
"I wanted to research these issues and find out what dreams mean to
Muslims so I concentrated on 'good' dreams- those from Allah. Such
dreams are part of the unseen world and are indicators, from god,
about rewards in paradise.
"Allah will give people positive messages about the hereafter
through their dreams. These dreams maybe pleasing, dreams where a
person feels satisfied and fresh and can feel that their soul is
happy. Then there are dreams in which a person can sense something
good will happen in the future, this knowledge can only be given by
Allah."
To prove his research, Dr Azam has noted down over a 100 of his own
dreams, and many of his family and friends, and interpreted their
meanings.
Said Dr Azam: "In one of the hadiths there is a special prayer and
if you are a good Muslim and read this prayer you will see your
house paradise.
"I have read this prayer and I have seen my house in my dream. This
is proof that god does exist.
"If you are not a good Muslim then shaytan (devil) will come to you
and you will have evil dreams." Dr Azam, a part time private tutor,
has been working on the link between Islam and dreams for the past
seven years.
He sent his completed thesis to the University of California which,
he says, awarded him a PhD.
He said: "My study is very new to the UK but in America it's huge
and the university found it interesting because they are doing
similar research.
"People who lack faith tell me 'dreams are just dreams - they don't
mean anything'. But, in Islam, belief in dreams is inherent, the
Prophets themselves received messages from Allah in dreams: Ibrahim
dreamt he was sacrificing Ismaeel and Prophet Mohammed experienced
valuable dreams.
"You should never dismiss your dreams, look into them and see what
God is trying to tell you."
