Delhi Sweet Centre
On Wilmslow Road for 33 years, Delhi has perfected the art of burfi, the square colourful sweets you see stacked up in the window and made from condensed milk and natural nuts and fruit flavours. Also on the menu are Gajer Halwah which gives an almost savoury mouthful of fresh carrot and cardamom. A personal favourite is Petha, this was once a pumpkin but you’d never guess after ten days of soaking in sugar. Price: £5 a kilo, around 30p a single sweet. 133 Wilmslow Road, Rusholme.
Ambala
Chain sweet centre Ambala (there’s one in Belgium and Chicago you know) are striving for quality rather than quantity. They do great Jaleba (the orangey squiggly sweets – keep up), crispy on the outside surrendering on contact with the teeth to a gooey honey-like liquid centre. Good sausage-shaped sponge Gulab Jaman too, but their burfi isn’t as distinctive as the Delhi’s. Price: £6.40 a kilo. 227 Wilmslow Road, Rusholme.
Sanam Sweet House
Sanam offer a similarly wide choice as the Delhi with stand-out Gulab Jaman, a delicious ball akin to doughnut batter soaked in syrup, fast becoming a dangerous addiction in my house. They also do tasty dense squares of different seeds in a sweet glue, but their Jaleba was more artificial tasting than the others. Price: £6.20 a kilo. 145 –151 Wilmslow Road, Rusholme.
