Chef aims for world record

8/10/2007

CHEFS at a top Indian restaurant are hoping to scale new heights in their bid to set a world record.

Staff at award-winning Indian Ocean Restaurant, in Ashton under Lyne, are aiming to build the biggest ever poppadum tower.

Preparation work has been going on around the clock to ensure the attempt this week, during the Tameside Food and Drink Festival, does not prove too tall an order.

To break the record, they will have to stack more than 300 poppadums on top of each other.

The event will raise funds for Oxfam's relief work in India and Asia.

Faz Aslam, marketing manager at the Indian Ocean, said: "We have been putting in a lot of practice and are confident we can do this {ndash} not only to get the world record but also to raise money for Oxfam. It should be a really exciting night."

Coun Jackie Lane, project head for heritage and tourism, said: "We are very excited about the range of unique and fun activities that have been arranged to celebrate the finest of Tameside's food and drink and we hope local people will join us in the festivities."

This borough's food festival, celebrating its fourth year, runs until Sunday.
