AS a curry lover, I am spoilt for choice. The obvious Mecca of Rusholme is not always convenient, however, especially at weekends if one wishes to avoid the crowds and the often “ ‘mass catered’ nature of the dishes produced to feed large volumes of well lubricated customers.

It is my good fortune then to have on my doorstep in Chorlton one of the finest and consistently good curry restaurants in Manchester. The Azad Manzil has never let me down.

Be it for an intimate one to one outing with someone special, where the choice of booth style seating offers privacy and cosiness, or for the classic ‘boys’ night out’ where the newly-refurbished extension offers the choice of larger seating arrangements.

The regular staff always seem pleased to welcome customers and serve a wide choice of classic Indian dishes with quiet efficiency. The menu, to be fair, at first seems no different to many curry houses, but the food! There’s the difference.

Each dish is prepared fresh to your order, spicy and delicious, my two favourites being the excellent tandoori mixed grill (when I want everything on the menu but can’t decide which, this gives a little of everything accompanied with the curry sauce of your choice) and the positively sublime chicken vindaloo – not the heavy handed chilli-fest experienced in lesser establishments but a subtle layering of flavours that slowly builds on the palate to a fantastically pleasing warmth and endorphin high.

Stuff jogging if you love curry; you’ll know what I mean! Compliment this with the clean strong tastes of Cobra and Kingfisher - it’s difficult to get much better.
Oh wait, it does!

You can also leave smug in the knowledge that you’ve paid a lot less than the mainstream punters trying to find somewhere to park on Wilmslow Road.
