Some people think you have to go to Rusholme for ‘a proper curry’ but I beg to differ - especially after sampling the goods at The Edge restaurant in Swinton.

Hidden away in the former Cromptons restaurant close to Swinton police station, the ‘contemporary Indian restaurant’ offers a modern, relaxing environment with a first class service from the friendly waiters.

The Chorley Road restaurant opened two years ago, is fully air conditioned and has a relaxing lounge bar upstairs which offers an ideal place to meet and chat before eating.

Its lengthy menu offers an array of Indian cuisine from the usual balti and jalfrezi dishes to the chef's recommendations which include chicken bombay, piri piri chicken and exotic delight.

One of our party of six opted for the later - chicken tikka, lamb tikka, and king prawns cooked in a medium sauce - and from the way he was smacking his lips it went down a treat.

Despite suffering criticism for always choosing the same dish - chicken tikka masala with pilau rice - I stayed with my favourite and I wasn’t disappointed.

The succulent charcoal grilled chicken swimming in thick almond sauce with onion, fresh ginger, capsicum and yoghurt was a real treat, made even tastier by the fresh Peshwari nan bread used to mop it up.

Others dishes chosen by our party were chicken tikka balti and chicken rogan josh while the two braver souls went for the hotter options of chicken tikka madras and lamb tikka madras.

All were perfectly cooked with just the required amount of spice and the drinks - Cobra beer being my chosen tipple - were chilled enough to soothe any heated tongue.

Unlike some curry houses the restaurant is modern with a white tiled floor, comfy high back leather chairs and mahogany furniture.

The place is clean and the staff are smart and polite - offering us free Baileys to finish off the evening.

Prices are reasonable with the bill for our table of six, having starters, main courses and drinks, coming to £100.

While some Indian restaurants seem to have a missing ingredient you can see where this one gets its name.
