Protect your hearing before it's too late

HEARING TROUBLE?

MOST bar and club staff remain without hearing protection despite new laws that come into effect next year.

The new EU directive states that firms have to ensure their employees are protected where noise levels exceed 85 decibels.

Most clubs and many bars and pubs fit into this category, although the music and entertainment industry has been given an exemption until April 2008. Apart from diminishing hearing capabilities, excessive noise can also cause tinnitus.

This is described as the noises that some people hear in their ears or in their head. These noises can take many forms, with descriptions ranging from whistling, humming and tissue paper rustling to kettles boiling. Some people hear their noises as tunes and melodies.

The common factor with all these sounds is that they do not originate from an external source. Nick Doughty of Tinnitus Research says: "Although noise is not the only cause of tinnitus, it can be a contributing factor. As decibel levels in today's environment rise, tinnitus is increasingly affecting younger people. Ear plugs that block out background noise but still enable hearing are an option."

FLUORIDE HELPS

RESEARCH shows that children living in areas where the water supplies are fluoridated were 15 per cent more likely to be free from tooth decay than those children in areas without added fluoride.

However, while talks are underway to introduce new water fluoridation schemes across the country, a recent survey shows that many people don't know what fluoride is.

The British Dental Health Foundation found that 13 per cent of those questioned believed fluoride was a mint flavour; 12 per cent thought it was a whitening product and 15 per cent said it was a marketing gimmick.

Dr Nigel Carter, chief executive of the foundation says: "It is a big concern that people know so little about fluoride - especially when strategic health authorities are starting consultations on new water fluoridation schemes.

"The foundation is in strong support of the fluoridation of public drinking water supplies to improve oral health and there have been a number of high-level scientific reviews that support our position.

"Fluoride is a naturally occurring mineral that is present in all water. It works by strengthening the enamel as it forms, making it more resistant to decay. It is the foundation's strong belief that adding fluoride to the water supply is the best and most cost-effective way of achieving a major improvement in oral health in this country."

The research also found that 28 per cent of people thought that their water supply was fluoridated - more than twice the true figure of 11 per cent. More than 40 per cent admitted they had no idea whether their water supply was fluoridated.

Most well-informed people would reject fluoridation. Maybe that's why authorities have allowed toothpaste manufacturers to do all the advertising. Advertisements don't have to tell the truth.

The truth is that the fluoride used in fluoridation is not natural at all. It's a contaminated waste product of the phosphate fertilizer industry.

The truth is that fluoride is neither a nutrient nor required for healthy teeth. Fluoride is a drug and, like all drugs, has side effects that affects different people in different ways from nausea and skin rash to arthritis and thyroid problems.

Fluoride should never ever be in anyone's water supply.

Why not Vitamin C - that's a nutrient that everyone needs and, unlike fluoride, doesn't build up in the bones to damaging levels.

Dr. Nigel is dubiously elusive in his extolling the wisdom and benefit of fluoridation. However, what is even more disturbing is the fact that MY COMMENT to Dr. Nigel's spin is only the second response posted in your on-line version of your paper.

Wake up people of Great Britain. Your health ministry and your government is doggedly determined, hell or high water, to fluoridate you against your informed consent.

All British citizens should read the brilliant response to Dr. Nigel from Winston Smith, Esq. regarding why fluoridation in your country must not spread and the fluoridation programs which presently persist should immediately cease.

Sincerely,
