Facing winter with herbs and spices

ASALAMU alaykum readers - hope you are all bearing up well in this wintry weather condition.

As promised, I am going to give you some helpful winter remedies which can aid you through the winter months. A little pick-me-up until spring arrives.

To keep warm and keep the colds and flu at bay, warm up with ginger root tea. Ginger is very good for our bodies, and taken in its pure form is even better. It helps to detoxify the blood and is good for circulation. To make ginger tea, simply peel the root ginger (0.5oz) and using a pestle and mortar, grind into a paste. Then put the paste into a cup and add a tea bag of your choice. Add a teaspoon of honey and take out the tea bag. Sip as tea. This should be repeated twice a week over the cold spell.

Cranberry juice is very good for women, especially those who are 40 years plus. It is very good to aid and support the immune system as well as helping to prevent infection, irritation and dryness. Home-made cranberry juice is excellent and can be stored for 3-4 days. Take 1pound of fresh cranberries and wash and put into two-pints of boiling water with one fresh orange, peeled and deseeded. Simmer the cranberries until the berries have 'popped' and the water is down to 1 pint. Allow to cool and then place the liquid into a strainer and into a jug. Add another pint of cold water and mix well. Place in the fridge securely preferably in a bottle with a cap. Drink one glass on an empty stomach every morning.

Avocado and cucumber make an excellent refreshing face mask. Peel and deseed the avocado and place in blender. Peel half a cucumber and cut into dices. Place in blender with avocado, add 1 teaspoon of honey and blend into paste. It is wise to invest in a face brush or use your fingers to apply the paste onto the face and hands not forgetting the neck area. Leave the paste on for good 15 minutes before washing with tepid water. Tone the skin before applying a good moisturiser. Feel the difference in the skin when you repeat this every month. The skin will start to feel firmer and will give you a fresher appearance.
