Looking good and staying healthy with Zahida Abbas
Asalamu Alaykum Readers.
I hope you are all well. Now that all the celebrations are over,
let's pay some attention to the food we consume.
Since the New Year we have been bombarded with media coverage on
slimming foods, health food, organic food and so on, but today I
want to talk to you about the benefits of eating fruit and
vegetable.
Eating five portions of fruit and vegetables can reduce the risk of
stroke by a staggering 26 per cent.
Statistics tell us that there are 67,000 deaths in the UK and
Europe alone as a direct result of stroke.
Scientists say fruit and vegetables are rich sources of foliate,
fibre, antioxidants and potassium, which helps to combat high blood
pressure, which is a major risk factor for causing stroke.
So let's us look at what makes a portion of fruit or vegetables.
l One apple, banana, pear or similar sized fruit
l Half a grapefruit or avocado
l One slice of a large fruit such as a melon, pineapple or
mango
l A glass of fruit juice (150ml)
l A dessert bowl of salad
l Two plums, small nectarines or similar sized fruit
l A teacup sized portion of berries, cherries or grapes
l Three heaped tablespoons of lentils, beans or pulses
To make life easy, why not make a glass of juice using some of
the above?
Fresh juice can be made in minutes from a mixture of fruit and
vegetables combined. For example carrot and apple juice with kiwi
in the morning and one in the evening will give you your daily
intake of minerals and vitamins.
Obviously change the ingredients around and be creative - who knows
what concoction you will invent!
Fresh juice like this will also help to boost your immune system
so your resistance to common flue and colds will be increased and
watch your skin clear and become radiant with health.
Why not start to walk a little more and build this into your day.
With the weather clearing now and summer looming ahead, start to
make some minor adjustments for a healthier lifestyle and by the
summer you will be so accustomed to the new healthier you, so much
that your friends and relatives will want to join you too.
