Northern belles have a ball

BIG hair, bold colours and big cleavages made a comeback at the awards as one starlet after another pulled out all the style stops to steal the show.

On the podium EastEnders might have taken the prize for Best Soap - but out on the purple carpet the southern soap's leading ladies were left behind in the battle of the best-dressed.

Instead, it was northern belles from Coronation Street, Emmerdale, and Hollyoaks who set the cameras flashing in a long line of super-sexy, super-chic, and super-expensive gowns.

Manchester-based stylist-to-the-stars Sian Lloyd Jones dressed Corrie stars Michelle Keegan (who won Best Newcomer) and Katherine Kelly on the night, travelling down to London with them to make sure everything was just right. It's a lot of work for one night - but, she reckons, it's worth it. "We've been putting Michelle's look together for the awards two months ago, it's a really big deal," Sian reveals. "We wanted a really classy - but fashion-forward look - for her, so we chose the blue Versace dress, with shoes by Jimmy Choo."

Patriotic

Katherine, meanwhile, went for a patriotic look, opting for a frock by Manchester-born designer Matthew Williamson. Just as fellow Street star Emma Edmondson went for local glamour with a backless blue dress from Vicky Martin.

Other winners in the style stakes included Corrie's Kym Ryder, who has really come into her own on the fashion front in the last few months, sporting a Philip Armstrong dress in bright yellow. Manchester- born Hollyoaks star Gemma Merna also bowled over photographers in a bold green number from the same designer. Emmerdale's Roxanne Pallet didn't fare so well, however, having a frock horror on the night when the strap of her Jovanni dress snapped on the way in. Luckily, she had a spare up her sleeve, with a white sequin dress from Vicky Martin back at the hotel for the after party.

But it wasn't just the dresses that were drawing attention at Saturday's soiree - as big hair became the talking point of the night, with no end of bouffants and beehives in sight. All the Coronation Street do's were styled by Manchester snippers James Roberts and Vince Allenby - who are so in-demand among the soap set that they were whizzed down to London to set up a special booth on the night.
