Big cardi cover-up

THERE is nothing more comforting than pulling on a chunky cardigan or jumper and snuggling up in front of the TV.

While the weather and the credit crunch might be keeping us indoors, there's no excuse for becoming a knitwear slob if you follow the latest trends for a stylish night in - or out.

Sakes manager for young fashion, Nikki Devine, of House of Fraser, Manchester explains: "There are so many knitwear options at the moment for all ages.

"Cardigans are great because they are an easy way to wear layers which are, of course, key to keeping warm.

"And this season pretty beading and embroidery help to create that feminine look."

For those wanting to buy something that will mix and match with different outfits, anything grey or neutral browns and blues are a good investment.

Long-length cardigans are versatile, worn long and loose with dresses or jeans or fitted with a waisted belt.

"The longer line cardigans are so easy to customise to your own style and shape," says Nikki.

"For a trendy look, you can match them with cowboy boots and check shirt or, to add shape, nip it in at the waist with a big belt."

Fine knits are also popular and can be layered with a slim polo neck for a flattering and warm season staple.

"Polo necks are a great way to liven up a plain knit while adding an extra layer of warmth at the same time.

"Mixing colours such as a cream polo with a black knit or teal green with a grey adds interest to plain styles.

"And, if you want to be more daring, you can layer your knitwear with a really bright polo neck or shirt. Fuchsia pink is popular this season."

Oversized collars, big buttons and funnel necks all get a look-in this season.

If you really can't afford to invest in new knitwear, you could always update old faithfuls with a coloured scarf, brooch, change of buttons or a belt.
