Spicy Hut restaurant strikes gold
18/12/2007
The Spicy Hut has become the first restaurant in Manchester's 'curry mile' to receive the Gold Award for Manchester’s Environmental Business Pledge.
With free advice from Manchester City Council and environmental consultants Groundwork, the restaurant on Wilmslow Road, Rusholme has introduced a number of energy saving and recycling measures that have increased sales and profits and reduced waste.
As well as installing low energy lighting, cooking and refrigeration equipment, the restaurant now uses a smart car for deliveries and has introduced recycling schemes.
Owner and manager of Spicy Hut, Shabir Muhgal said: " We are delighted to be the first restaurant in Rusholme to receive the Gold Award.
"Since taking the Pledge we have saved around £1500 a year in bills; which is about 30% of our energy use, and our more efficient fridges have increased our beer sales, as it’s colder and more refreshing! This, and the fact that we are the only restaurant in Rusholme with such an award, has helped increase our annual turnover by £20,000 and safeguarded three part time jobs.
"The Environmental Business Pledge is an excellent scheme and I would urge any businesses to join."
There are currently over 1000 companies signed up to the Pledge, who can receive expert advice to enable them to achieve Bronze, Silver and Gold awards in recognition of their efforts to improve the environment by disposing of waste correctly, keeping the premises clean inside and out and introducing energy saving and recycling measures.
Award winners receive certificates and window stickers to show their customers that they are part of a growing number of Manchester businesses committed to improving the environment.
Councillor Neil Swannick, Manchester City Council's Executive Member for the Environment said: "We are delighted that The Spicy Hut in Rusholme has achieved the Gold award helping Manchester become the
greenest city in Britain. We are very pleased to see that by joining the Pledge, The Spicy Hut has managed to save jobs as well as energy!"
