Takeaway is first to get new health award

22/ 5/2008

A TAKEAWAY in Haslingden is the first winner of a new catering award set up by Rossendale Council.

Bengal Tiffin, on Manchester Road, is the first winner of the Recipe 4 Health award, set up recently between Rossendale Council’s Environmental Health Department and Lancashire County Council Trading Standards.

The award was launched to encourage businesses to promote healthy eating, provide wholesome and safe food, and to bring about environmental improvements in catering premises across the Valley.

Those who make the grade, following an assessment by environmental health and trading standards officers, are awarded a certificate and window sticker to display at their premises.

Four ticks are up for grabs in the categories: clean and fair, which looks at how food businesses comply with legal requirements; healthy eating, where caterers are encouraged to provide a range of healthy eating options; environment, which assesses measures to help protect the environment such as recycling waste and using energy-saving light bulbs; and allergens, where businesses demonstrate they provide the right information for those with conditions such as nut and wheat allergies.

Syed Miah, owner of Bengal Tiffin, which has all four ticks, said: ‘We are pleased to be the first recipient of this award.

‘It will give confidence to consumers that the food premises are meeting legal and health standards in the preparation and supply of food.’

Hayley Robinson-Mitchell, principal environmental health officer at Rossendale Council, said: ‘Food businesses have to get the "clean and fair" tick in order to comply with legislation, but we are naturally encouraging businesses to go for all four ticks.’
