Global move for plastics experts

A BURY manufacturer is enjoying new fortunes after daring to go global.

Trenslo, which is part of the DRM group, makes plastic parts which are used in lingerie, swimwear and bridal gowns.

The company, which has been in business for more than three decades, was facing a tough time after many UK lingerie and clothing firms relocated to cheaper manufacturing bases in Eastern Europe and the Far East.

Peter McGuinness, who has been at the family-owned DRM for almost 30 years, decided to buy Trenslo in 2002.

He said: "The company was facing an uncertain future after the decline in the number of lingerie manufacturers in the UK. However, we started looking at new export markets, and today the plastic parts are regularly sent to central America, Sri Lanka, the Far East and Europe. By not being afraid to go global, we have managed to keep Trenslo as a UK-based manufacturer."

Trenslo, which turns over around £200,000, also supplies Manchester-based couture house Co Cu.

The company is one of five in the DRM stable which has been in the hands of the McGuinness family since the 1940s. The other four specialise in industrial textiles and primarily manufacture laundry and filter bags. The group employs 60 and has an annual turnover of £2.5m.
